Remembering the genocide

No visit to Kigali — or Rwanda — would be complete without paying respects at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Located in the Gisozi district, this memorial serves as the final resting place for over 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide. 

The exhibits inside are powerful, moving, and deeply educational, offering insights into the causes and consequences of the genocide, as well as Rwanda’s extraordinary path to healing and reconciliation. The memorial is a sobering but necessary experience, fostering a deeper understanding of the resilience and strength of the Rwandan people. 

Located inside Rwanda’s Parliament building, the Campaign Against Genocide Museum offers a different but equally powerful perspective on the 1994 genocide, focusing on the heroic efforts by the Rwandan Patriotic Army to end the atrocities. 

The museum features detailed exhibits, photographs, and artifacts that tell the story of Rwanda’s darkest chapter and its ongoing journey toward peace and unity.

For a vibrant burst of color and creativity, head to the Inema Arts Center. Founded by two brothers, Innocent and Emmanuel Nkuranga, this lively gallery showcases contemporary Rwandan art of all genres: paintings, sculptures, and mixed media. 

Inema is not just a gallery — it’s a buzzing hub for workshops, live music, dance performances, and community art projects. You’ll often find artists at work, and most of the art is available for purchase if you want to take a piece of Rwanda’s creative spirit home with you. Also, be sure to check their event calendars — the evening performances can be a real treat. 

For a glimpse of modern Kigali, head to the Kigali Convention Center — an architectural masterpiece lit up at night in a dazzling display of colors. Nearby is the Rwanda Art Museum (formerly the Presidential Palace Museum), which features contemporary art alongside relics from Rwanda’s presidential history, including debris from the plane crash that triggered the 1994 genocide. 

Kimironko Market

If you want to experience Kigali’s daily life, Kimironko Market is the place to go. This bustling marketplace offers everything from fresh produce and spices to colorful kitenge fabrics and handmade crafts. 

The market is a sensory overload in the best possible way: the smells of fresh fruit, the buzz of bargaining shoppers, the vivid displays of Rwandan fabrics ready to be tailored into custom clothing. Bring cash, practice your bargaining skills, and don’t be shy about asking vendors about their goods — Rwandans are famously friendly and happy to share their stories. 

Mount Kigali

For breathtaking views of the city and its surrounding countryside, take a hike or drive up Mount Kigali. While it's technically more of a large hill, it offers fantastic panoramic vistas and a peaceful escape from urban life. 

At the summit, you'll find walking trails, horseback riding opportunities, and a few small cafes where you can sip a cold drink while enjoying the scenery. The hill is best enjoyed in the early morning or the late afternoon as these times boast the best light for photography and cooler temperatures. 

Walk with the women of Nyamirambo 

One of Kigali’s most dynamic and culturally rich areas is Nyamirambo, a predominantly Muslim neighborhood known for its lively streets, colorful shops, and delicious food. 

To really explore Nyamirambo, book a walking tour with the Nyamirambo Women’s Center. Their tours are guided by local women and offer an authentic glimpse into daily life, from visiting local homes and mosques to tasting traditional snacks and learning a few Kinyarwanda phrases. Afterwards you can repay the favour by supporting their boutique shop, which sells beautifully crafted textiles, bags, and home decor items made by women in the community. 

Eat, drink and be merry 

Rwanda is famous for its world-class coffee, and Question Coffee is probably the best place in Kigali to experience it. More than just a café, Question Coffee is part of a broader initiative to support female coffee farmers across Rwanda. You can take a coffee masterclass, learn about the bean-to-cup process, and of course, enjoy some of the freshest and richest brews imaginable. 

Kigali’s food scene is thriving. You’ll find a mix of traditional Rwandan dishes and international flavors. Some top places to try include Heaven Restaurant, which offers excellent Rwandan fusion cuisine with stunning city views; Meze Fresh which specialises in delicious burrito bowls made from fresh, local ingredients; and Poivre Noir, offering high-end French and international cuisine for a special night out. 

Don’t leave the city without trying isombe (cassava leaves cooked with peanut sauce) and brochettes (grilled meat skewers) – two staples of Rwandan cooking.
